August 2011 GlossyBox

Yes, everyone has been posting about GlossyBox. I know, I know. But still, I feel like I want to offer my two cents so bear with me. Last week I received my first box and all that glamourous packaging made me eager to hop straight in and discover what all the fuss is about. GlossyBox is a subscription service costing £10 per month plus £2.95 shipping (total £12.95). Your hard earned cash gets you a delightful pink and black package shipped to your home each month containing beauty miniatures to try out. Occasionally the items are full size which is a nice little bonus. If you like 'em you can repurchase via the web site.
Unfortunately, I just can't muster up that much enthusiasm for the GlossyBox concept - in spite of it's popularity and the fact that I should probably be over the moon to try out new stuff. I think my reservations stem from the funny feeling that this could work out to be quite wasteful over the course of several months. Using this box as an example - the peel on, peel off nails will go unused for sure (already tried something similar and hated it) and it only took one sweep of Daniel Sandler Jumbo Jet to determine that the mascara I was initially excited about (being full size an' all) is fated for the same. Having said that I'm thrilled to try out the KMS heat protector and a girl can never have too much body lotion. I guess it's 50/50.

Obviously, some boxes will be 'better' than others. And it's probably the control freak in me that resists the idea for this reason. I like to know where my money is going and don't want to risk disappointment. I'm a huge beauty blog fan because I can take my time pouring over honest reviews written by real women and make considered decisions about the purchases I make. If it's costing me money I kinda don't want a surprise!

I'd also like it a whole lot better if the box was slimline to fit through standard letterboxes and with no signature required. It's a drag to go to the collection office each month if nobody is home to accept delivery.

That's enough about me - what do you girls think? Do leave a comment and tell all - I'd love to hear your views. Maybe I should persevere and try it out for a few months before passing full judgement?

  1. I would never sign up for something like this, giving my hard earned cash for a lottery of products. I'd much rather just obtain samples from beauty counters and buy the full size if I like it, so I'm with you on this one.

  3. Great honest review. I don't think I would sign up for something like this, I like to spend my money on products that I've read about, been recommended or lusted after for a long time. I do wonder how the company is actually making any money out of this with the amount of complimentary boxes that are being sent out! x

  4. I have signed up to this to get the sept box, and I am looking forward to seeing what we recieve but i am also apprehensive too. I tried boudoir prive but cancelled my subscription with them. The next one to try is Feel Unique. Thank you for such an honest review. x

  5. I'm part of a USA service that is very similar, Birchbox, and have been satisfied by each box. I actually really enjoy the surprise/mystery of wondering what will be in my box but I can understand why some people would feel hesitant about it.

  7. I'm signed up to 3 (GlossyBox, Boudoir Prive and FeelUnique) as I wanted to see which one was more suited to me, I review them all once a month based on price and items-I totally agree with what you're saying about them potentially being a waste if you don't love all the products so any products I don't want to try out are just going to go on eBay.
I kinda justify the price as I don't spend out too much on other beauty products and hopefully ill make a little bit of that money back on eBay.
I love getting post, especially when its a suprise box of goodies!
    Xx

  8. I agree I'd rather know where my money is going! I much prefer blog sales because you can pick up high end products for very low prices to try out & know what you're getting in advance :). Loved your review xx

  9. I've had every box so far and although there have been products I haven't used I've been impressed overall. I like to try new products and for me this is an easy way to do so, I'd prefer it if they hadn't started to charge extra for P&P though.

  10. I agree that it's too much of a risk. It's not like it's so cheap you can't pass it up. the note is sweet though :)

ps. I'm excited for your new lay-out. I'm hoping you'll start sharing some personal stuff also. It is called a 'journal' after all. Take us on a day in Sofia's life!

  11. I've never even heard of this! I would be all over it if I had $10.00 to throw away every month, as it is, I would rather know that I'm buying. Maybe people should be able to check boxes of beauty products they haven't tried yet but would like to.

  12. I'll be receiving my first Glossybox in September and I'm really excited about it. I'm not that hard to impress when it comes to beauty products so that's probably why I'm quite confident I'll be okay when mine comes. As long as they don't give me something I already know I don't like haha. x

  13. I am a stickler for finding something that works and sticking with it so I don't really go crazy for beauty products. I also have zero dollars and I can't even get my Proactive sent to me every three months so I would never sign up for this. (Now if it was a pair of shoes or chocolate I might reconsider)

  14. I feel the same way, I feel like I'd end up with a box in my press full of products I wont use xx

  15. I've signed up to get the september one, but I am a bit worried that my money will end up being wasted on things I don't really want/like.

I guess I'm going to give it a couple months try and see how it goes :) x

  16. It's a really cool concept, but I agree with the control freak bit of this; I would be terrified of disappointment and getting a "not-so-great" box.

  18. I like the idea of Glossy Box and receiving things I wouldn't otherwise try but not sure if I would find it that useful as I already have my go to products. But then I guess we are always on the look out for a cool new product that is better than what we already have so the idea in principle is good. Bit annoying they don't go through letterboxes though!

  20. i've been receiving the USA version (birchbox) for a few months now, & the excitement is beginning to wear off for me. i'll probably finish out the year & then cancel. i have gotten some really great products, but also some that i have barely used.

  21. I completely agree with you. Its something I would sign up for but never be sure if it was entirely worth it. I think ultimately I'd rather save and splurge on a couple products.
