I often get emails asking for advice on how to build a following when you start out blogging. Obviously, not everyone has this agenda, but this post is for those that do. If you're the blogger who blogs primarily for yourself and dislikes the concept of presenting your ideas with the motive of increasing subscribers then this post will probably irritate you. Don't hate - take a look at these extraordinarily cute pictures instead.
I'm clearly no expert but I figure why not share my views - hopefully some little snippet of this post will prove useful. Now, get a cup of tea and make yourself comfortable because this is long...
1. Be committed. Blogging is a little like weight loss. You have to put the effort in for a while before you see real results. That's a strange window to be in; after all as humans we only want to partake in activities that heed positive results quickly. And that's why most people give up blogging before they 'succeed'.
2. Even after a long period of commitment, still perservere. It took 6 months before I had 100,000 hits to my blog. Then in the 7th month I had 100,000 hits in one month. It took a long time before my traffic grew. Nothing in life worth having ever comes easily. And blogging is no different.
3. Believe. Like anything in life it'll only happen if you believe. I believed in Sofia's Journal from the outset and that's what kept me going, even when it felt like my blog was completely insignificant. I believed the blog was worthwhile (to me!) whether people read or not.
4. Do not compare your blog to anyone else's because it'll drive you mad. There will always be bigger and better blogs. Just focus on yourself and make improvements where you see fit. And don't ever let the perfect get in the way of the good. Sometimes I get frustrated because I wish I had basic graphic design skills to make things look a little funkier around here (and maybe I'll learn some of that in the future) but I don't let it get in the way of continuing on with a hobby I love. Your readers don't expect 'perfection' - they expect 'good'!
5. Be chatty. Leave meaningful comments on blogs that fall within the same niche as your own. Readers will notice your comment and if you sound interesting or your picture hooks them in then they're likely to click your link and visit your blog. Case in point - the majority of bloggers I've featured in The Sunday Click List were discovered because they left comments on my blog. Likewise, join twitter and learn how to use it. Then really use it. It's a powerful promotional tool. Talk to people. Befriend other bloggers. Become part of the community.
6. Take note of what you love about your favourite blogs. Write it all down. And there you have it - a list of what makes a good blog. Now keep those things in mind when you write your own. But don't copy - that's just lame.
7. Advertise. If you're serious about gaining a larger audience then consider advertising on a blog with a bigger following than your own. It's generally really cheap (or free if you swap buttons with a blogger friend!) and can work well. Just be sure to have a pretty looking advert (so people feel compelled to click!) and make sure your blog is sticky enough (sticky: see point 8) that you convert hits to new followers.
8. Make your blog 'sticky' - and by 'sticky' I mean this: If you're lucky enough to have someone new click through to your blog it has to stand out to make them stick around (i.e. subscribe). It might be a beautiful blog header and all round cool site design that will hook them in for a moment but they need more than that. I kept new visitors in mind in a few different ways but primarily, I made navigation as easy as possible - a Popular Posts tab beneath the header, a list of product reviews and a selection of regular features reside in the sidebar. This sends a message to the reader that if they stick around there's a whole lot more good stuff other than what they see on the first page. Another way to do this is by installing the LinkWithin widget beneath your posts.
9. Don't blog for money or for free swag. There's absolutely nothing wrong in gaining financially from your blog or in receiving products for review. Nothing. But if that's your number one priority when you sign up to Blogger you'll most likely be deeply disappointed. Instead you need to be passionate about writing. And be in love with your subject matter. They're the only things that will truly fuel your motivation.
10. Image is everything. Your blog must be aesthetically pleasing!
♥ Make your photos large. Nobody wants to screw up their eyes in order to see the images that compliment your writing. If you don't know how to make your photographs the entire width of your post then Google it. All the information you need is out there.♥ Make your images prettier. Learn how to use photo editing tools to full effect. I particularly like Picasa, Picnik, Fotoflexer and Gimp - all free and all pretty awesome.
♥ For cute photographs to accompany your awesome writing, search: We Heart It, Pinterest, Google Image Search and Flickr: Creative Commons.♥ Seriously consider making your background white. I don't regularly read a single blog that doesn't have a white background to the primary text. My eyes don't like it any other way.
♥ Try to include a great photograph of yourself in the sidebar. Studies have shown that a web site or advert gains far more interest if the reader sees a human face right away!
♥ Taking photographs of products? Be aware of how the background looks. An interesting fabric, wallpaper or wrapping paper underneath always looks cute. For info of what camera I use check out my FAQ page.
♥ Other elements I deem important: a search box function, interesting 'about' page (yes, I really need to work on mine!), contact and social media icons that are clearly displayed and membership of bloglovin'!
And finally, a word or two about being unique.
I appreciate that, in an endless sea of blogs, it's really quite hard to be unique. Every angle has already been covered. A million times over. But it is still possible to give your readers something they can't find elsewhere. Include your own personal photography as much as possible and develop a writing style, charm and sense of humour that is individual to you. The only thing you have that is truly unique is yourself. So be yourself and express your opinions freely. If you have new and creative ideas your blog will stand out.

Now, over to you... I need your input! Tell me what you like, love, dislike, hate about my blog - what would you like to see more of? And less of? What do you think makes a great blog! If you have any questions about aspects I failed to cover here then leave a comment and I'll compile a follow up post or get back to each of you individually.

thanks! those tips really are helpful!
ReplyDeletegreat post! i agree with all you've said. it's so important to be true to yourself and honest in your posts because your readers will pick up on that right away. and i totally agree that gaining a following takes a long time; it doesn't just happen over night and its easy to get discouraged. but as long as you blog for yourself, they will come :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! I am currently on my way to building my blog and making it more exciting so thanks for the tips!
ReplyDeleteI always think that my favourite blogs are ones where you really feel like the writer is a friend because of the way they write, even when you've not met them. Yours comes into that category!

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this post! As a blogger that's just starting out, I found it a really useful and interesting insight into how such a successful blog like this started out the same as everyone elses. I'll definitely be saving a few of these tips for future reference!
ReplyDeleteI love how everything is so easily accessible on this blog: if I want to read about something specific, like a review or a 'how to', I don't have to scroll through hundreds of posts to find what I'm looking for.
(And how amazing is that t-shirt?!)
These are great tips, thanks!
ReplyDeleteI appreciate every new follower and although I blog for myself primarily, its lovely to think others actually are interested in reading too!
xx
Great tips(:, i'm surprised to hear that you wish you had better graphic design skills, in my opinion your blog is one of the best looking out there!xx
ReplyDeletefabulous post!
ReplyDeletesuch a great post! i totally agree with all of the tips you have suggested! so nice to know that there are bloggers out there that blog because they truly love it! thanks sofia!

This is a really great post, I agree with all your points! :) I love your layout and the colour scheme of your blog, it's so simple but effective. I think you have blogging down to a T :) xoxo
ReplyDelete@ Holly - geez, thanks! I'm surprised you say that ;)
ReplyDelete@ Alycia - exactly - it seems to be that whoever genuinely blogs for themselves wins through.
@ salut! sophie - glad you found it useful & totally happy that you can navigate easily enough round here!
Great tips!! I've only been blogging for a few months but I've met so many amazing people! And I definitely need to work on my about page too haha
ReplyDeleteI think you're blog is great! Easy to navigate, simple but inviting layout, clear concise posts, good photos. The only thing (and I'm getting nitpicky here, so feel free to ignore haha) would be the text colour. Maybe a little darker? It is totally readable, but I guess I just prefer dark fonts on white backgrounds.
Some great tips here, thanks! The main thing that captures my attention when looking at new blogs is the layout, then there pictures and what they write about, so because this is how I would follow a blog I have tried to do the same to my blog. I am also in the process of buying a new lens for my camera so I can improve of my "outfit of the day posts" and I think your blog is great!
ReplyDeleteCheck out my blog here!
Brilliant tips Soph! Really enjoyed reading this. Blogging has never felt like a chore to me because I write about the things I'm interested in. I know you do the same and I think that's what has us happy little bloggers:) Or famous blogger in your case!
ReplyDeleteI loved this post :) Like, loved haha. Been dying to read it since you mentioned it on twitter (I hope that doesn't sound like I stalk your blog activity haha), and it was just what I needed to give me the confidence to keep writing.
ReplyDeleteI just started a blog last week , and it is weird writing at first when you know no-one is reading, but oh well!
And about your blog - you don't need to change a thing. Just keep doing what you're doing :))

Thank you Sofia! You have no idea how great this is to read...it gives us that extra little oomph that we all need to stay inspired. Our blog is only 3 weeks old today...we're just babies to this whole thing, but we are loving every second & so enjoy "meeting" new people from all over the world. We'll definitely be taking some of your suggestions & running with them...thank you so much! ;)

ReplyDeleteFab post. Ive recently felt a bit lost/ at a dead end with my blog so reading this was a help :)
ReplyDeleteGreat tips, and I couldn't help but look at the cute pics! Love the puppy dogs.
ReplyDeleteMy blog is up an coming and I have found that commenting is also a great way to find bloggers who share the same intrests and style.

Great useful post! I have only recently started a blog, and felt a little lost to begin with but have just posted what I wanted to and tried not to compare mine with others. I think that is the most important thing actually, being yourself! I tend to like blogs because they are unique and stand out (like yours! :D)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely amazing post, Sofia! Perfect advice! xo
ReplyDeleteGreat tips. I just joined Pinterest last week. I'm trying to figure it all out.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, with useful advice!
ReplyDeleteI might have to have a look at pinterest!
I enjoyed reading this post! I know what you mean about having a white background, my eyes are silly and only appear to read black and white! I really love reading your blog anyways, it makes me smile when I see your new posts pop up on my dashboard :) xx
ReplyDeleteI gave up writing my first two blogs as I compared them to other peoples and got disheartened because they weren't good, in my eyes.
ReplyDeleteI'm on my third now, so thank you for the tips.

You're so inspiring! I love your positive thoughts.. you might not know it but you just gave me a lot of strenght (not only in blogging-things) by only writing BELIEVE, I really needed that and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one (:
ReplyDeletethank you for sharing! xx
I think it's lovely that you're sharing tips! Most successful bloggers out there seem to want to be all 'mysterious' about it. It's silly really.
ReplyDeletex
Really excellent advice - and I don't think anyone should underestimate the phrase 'persevere'... You have to do it for yourself, and any readers at all should be seen as a bonus in the first months. I know I felt like quitting a fair bit back then, you just can't help but expect instant readers, and end up disappointed.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty new to the world of blogging and this post has helped me/ inspired me a million fold! I have taken your advice immediately and I changed some features on my blog already. Thank you for being so helpful and sharing your knowledge. We need more bloggers (and people) in the world like you! Thanks again,

First of all let me just say that the effort you put into your blog posts shows...and that for me is what makes this blog so worth following.Let alone your charm, lovely photography, fun topics and great writing. More than anything your blog seems real-down to earth- I feel like I'm getting to know you-the real you.Lovely tips and thank you for sharing.it seems that a lot of the bloggers out there want to be at the top of the hill all by themselves...whereas for me its about the blogging community and how people all over the world can relate and unite through similar interests. Oh god you really got me going.lovely post.lovely blog.-i'll stop now-
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips! 100,000 hits! 1000 would make me happy :)

Thank you so much for posting this, I'm a new blogger so I really appreciate your advice. The number one thing I love in blogs is photography, I like to see an effort has been made by the blogger to take their own pictures and that's what I like about your blog. Keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteThanks for such a wonderfully informative post - my blog is still quite small and although I'm writing for myself - almost as an online diary - rather than trying to build a large following, it's still lovely to hear from people who read your blog (it genuinely makes my day when i have comments) and the blogging community in general is friendly and fantastic!
ReplyDeleteThis really is useful and I'll continue to pass on to others so that they might also benefit from your wise words!
You've asked us to also provide feedback on your blog... I honestly can't think of any constructive criticism.. So I'll give you my favourite parts:
- Your photos are always gorgeous - true talent
- Youre honest, not many bloggers who'll tackle tough subjects while heartedly
- the FAQ section is helpful - save extra hassle from plums like me. Genius!
So there we go... :)

ReplyDeleteThanks for a useful post. I started blogging at the beginning of the year because after reading others for so long I thought it would be fun. It is a great way to keep track of what I am doing and I really enjoy sharing. Although I didn't start with the aim of getting readers I must say that I get very excited when I do get a new follower.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I've only just discovered your blog and, after reading your tips, I feel more inspired to keep up the momentum on my blog. I've been blogging for 6 months' now and even though it's still small (sob!) I'm hoping that it will grow and people will respect my views and opinions on anything from fashion to life!
ReplyDeleteAm now following your blog!

I adore your layout, and can't wait to check out some of your other posts xoxo
ReplyDeleteThis is such a fantastic post. I agree with everythin you've said, and you've said it in such a better way than I could have too!
ReplyDeleteAt first I only had a few people visit my blog, but I've kept going as I enjoy posting every day about new outfits, trends and celebrity gossip!
ReplyDeleteI recently changed to wordpress for a fresher, cleaner look and love it!
I also link my posts to Tumblr, which seems to get a lot of traffic.

ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this. I really like number 4. I'm just starting out, and I was going round comparing how my 'newish' blog compared with everyone else's. But now I will be calm!

ReplyDeleteHi Sofia! I'm a new reader here. Your blog is one of the ones that really inspired me to start my own. I am really enjoying going through and reading all of your posts! - xo Tems.
ReplyDeleteGreat tips, I have been writing about surfing for about a month now and have learned so much from blogs like this one.
ReplyDeletePersonal tips, rather than generic advice are so much more useful!
Sofia I just want to thank you ever so much for these tips. I tried blogging and I understood the first and second tips instantly - I didn't persevere!! I expected instant results and when I didn't get them I thought that it was worthless. Since then my creative juices stopped flowing, so I've decided to get them going by starting up a blog again!
ReplyDeleteFor any of you (and Sofia of course!) reading I'd greatly appreciate it if you took a look at my blog! It's a work in progress and I've yet to splash out loads of posts, but I'd appreciate it! ♥

I just wanted to thank you for these tips, but also for just inspiring me to finally be serious about starting a blog myself. I love reading your posts. You seem to have hit the perfect balance between personal tidbits and professional objectivity, very enjoyable to read!
ReplyDeleteIt's so true what you've written about being committed, showing perseverance and believing in your ideas! I have started up blogs before the one I'm currently working on, but I never really believed in them. I think that is why I never continued working on any of them, and why I will continue working on my current blog. I genuinely want to explore and experience.
I hope I can incorporate most of your tips, they'll surely be in the back of my head all the time!

Thank you so much! This post really helps!
ReplyDeleteit's so nice when people are willing to share some tricks of the trade to the newbies of the blog world!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for writing this! It is so inspiring to read this. As a fairly new blogger (I started at the beginning of this year) reading this was super helpful! I've spent the afternoon bookmarking links, tweaking my blog and adjusting it with your tips, while still keeping it my own. As of now it's a year in photos blog but after the year is up it will probably turn into something else, but I have no idea what.
ReplyDeleteBut I just wanted to say thank you for aspiring to help out other bloggers, new and old.
Thank you very much for sharing these very useful tips.
ReplyDeleteI am new at blooging and I am really trying to learn as more as I can from lovely bloggers as you are.

Wow, great tips here. I've just started blogging again after a pretty long hiatus (a new blog for a new me!) and I'm giving it time for my own voice to come through. And yes it is hard not to want to make it look/feel just the same as everyone elses, particularly when there are so many great blogs out there.
