You know that compilation of wrist tattoos I posted recently? Well, that's now the most popular post on my blog. I never knew tattoos were so popular. The 70+ comments on that post are also such a great read. I have a very fun tattoo related competition/give-away coming soon. I can't wait to share it and hope you'll all be up for contributing.Anyway. Lots of you asked what tattoo I was contemplating for myself. I haven't talked with anyone else about the style of tattoo I want until now. Probably because it's slightly embarrassing to be obsessing over a tattoo already on a celebrity's body. Not very original am I? I've had images of Jessica Alba's wrist tattoo stored on my computer for months.

Visually, it's not even particularly attractive. There are millions more superficially appealing wrist tattoos out there. But the meaning just gets me. Like, really gets me. It just seems so unbelievably relevant to my life that it's the only ink that I've been close, so close, to having imprinted on me forever.
This tattoo is the Sanskrit (ancient Indian language) word 'padma' meaning lotus flower. Spiritually, the lotus flower is incredibly symbolic. As I understand it, in many religions it's regarded as a physical representation of the human soul. The lotus starts it's life beneath the murky muddy waters but eventually blossoms into the most beautiful of flowers basking in sunshine.
For me, the significance is profound - it's about rising above the struggle to reach a point of enlightenment. A new beginning, whereby you can forget the past and no longer feel tainted by it. It's like moving away from darkness into the light. Deep, huh?!

So, will I get it? Who knows. Maybe. Just not right now. I definitely see a tattoo in my future - I would hate to die without one :) One of my main character flaws is indecision, so I've put the idea on the back burner for the time being. Leave a comment and tell me what tattoo you are considering! Would you ever 'copy' the tattoo of a celebrity or someone you saw online? Or is that totally uncool?!Don't forget to follow me on bloglovin' and twitter and like this blog on facebook!
Happy Pancake Day girls!

I think that's a lovely tattoo, and it's quite unusual so I don't think you'd come under fire for getting one the same as a celebrity.
ReplyDeleteI want a tattoo, too, but like you am very indecisive!
I'm thinking of getting a bird, heart or symbol similar to the above eventually though :)
I think thats a lovely tattoo. Yes I would get one that a celebrity had if it meant something to me. I have a star on my wrist I love I'm so happy I got it :) xo
ReplyDeleteI loved your recent wrist tattoo inspiration post... it really got me thinking and I have a post in progress underway at the moment. I spent hours on tattoologist!
ReplyDeleteI love wrist tattoos... I actually have a little star on my right hand, might get one more on the side of my ring finger... Ok it's an odd place for a tattoo, but I like it to be odd!

I have a small tattoo on my wrist and I'm thinking about my next one, their addictive!! I love this idea, it's so cute.
ReplyDeleteNow I'm off to decide on my next one...if only I had the money!!

I got a star tattoo on my wrist a few years ago because everyone else was getting them. Big mistake. I wish I had gotten something with actual meaning to it.
ReplyDeleteI think it's lovely...I hate injections, needles, ANYTHING that pierces the skin *but* if I was too ever get one it would be a neck or wrist tatto...*sigh*
ReplyDeleteI think as long as it means something to you, it doesn't matter if someone else has it.
ReplyDeleteI like that tattoo, it's discreet and if it means something to you I don't think it matters that it's the same as someone else's.
ReplyDeleteI definitely want to get a tattoo at some point, really like your line about not wanting to die without one - I feel the same but just don't know what I want to get and where on me...I can't get one that's visible so as much as I love wrist tattoos they're out of the question for me. I guess I have a few more years to make up my mind on what I want! x
no matter what tattoo you decide on, just make sure that you have a deep personal relation to it and then it doesn't really matter how "original" it is :)
ReplyDeleteI've got two tattoos of my own and already plans for the next three.. it's really addicting ;)

That is a lovely meaning! Definitely a fan of wrist tattoos. I don't think I'll ever get one but if I did, it'd be a wrist one.
ReplyDeleteAlso- how gorgeous is Jessica Alba?! x
i love lotus'! & the whole symbolism, i've often contemplated a small lotus on me.
ReplyDeletei love that idea and the meaning behind it is so true to life! ive got the same tattoo megan fox has on her ribs, also on my ribs, "there once was a little girl who never knew love" hers also says "until a boy broke her heart" but i only have the first bit.
ReplyDeleteso no i do not think it is sad having the same as a celeb cause there only people at the end of the day their tattoos are just more known/seen as they are famous, blogs like tattooligist is amazing for inspiration too xxx
OMG. I love your blog. My name's Anna, I'm a stylist and visual merchandiser in LA. I'm 23 years old and moved to California after graduating back in south with a degree in visual merchandiser. I've worked with such designers as Max Azria, Nicole Richie, and my idol Rachel Zoe. I'd love if you visited my new blog for multiple posts a day on all things fashion. I'd love the support. I'm following you, I hope you'll do the same. Thanks so much.

I have always loved tattos that symbolise something, the meaning of this one makes it so much more beautiful :)
ReplyDeleteI've always pondered about getting a tatto on my wrist too, but like this, I think it would have to mean something. I would want it to be really personal to me (:
I'm looking foward to see if you get one or not!
:D
Oh, and I can't thankyou enough for following me. It means so much to me. Thankyou, you're so lovely and your blog is amazing! :D
Naomiet xxxx
This is a lovely tattoo and it has a really sweet meaning too. Although I'm just like you, I really want a tattoo but just can't decide on what to get, I want to get something that means something to me and that know-one else has. I'm just waiting for inspiration to strike ha x
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping to get a wrist tattoo soon with my daughter's name, Tara, on me. I also want to get her footprints, but don't know if I want that with her name on my wrist or maybe get the footprints on my ankle.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it is uncool to copy the celebrity.
ReplyDelete" Steal from the best and make it your own "
<3
just get it!!!! It will hurt like crazy but its worth it :-)
ReplyDeleteI got my first tattoo last summer on the inside of my right ankle. I'm very indecisive as well, and though i knew what i wanted to get, i went back and fourth i guess more so with my courage of if i'd actually get it. Lot's of people regret their tattoos, but mine is one of the best decisions i've ever made. i love it. I drew it myself and had it taped to my mirror for all 4 years of high school (i got it summer after my senior year, when i was 18, that was my rule to myself). It's of a seahorse and it has very multiple meanings to me.
ReplyDeleteI've seen a couple people with seahorse tattoos, but i think mine is the best O:] but i'm sure i'm biased. and i dont think it matter who else has it and where, it's really all about what it means to you. I know what mine means to me, and i am confident that that is why i don't regret it. Now i have an idea for a second one (possibly this summer). I will warn you, they're addictive. I never thought i wanted more than one. Now i want one of the inside of my left wrist! Plus i have this weird thing of feeling balanced if i got one there... :]P
HIya hun :) What can I say I'm lovin' your blogs so far and will stay a long while your baun epilator review made me giggle a lot.
ReplyDeleteIn the future I'm considering to get Freja Beha erich'ss tattoos check em out they are bloody amazing! <3
The Lotus Flower is an inherent symbol of Bhuddism. As previoulsy noted, the flower's seed begins its existence in the mud and finally it reaches the Sunlight. This process examplifies our existence to achieve Nirvana, aka Enlightenment as the Bhudda said Centuries ago. We all experience life in our different ways, and once you understand that, and have come to accept this simple truth, than you are ready to feel compassion for your fellow human beings. If I were to have a Tattoo, I'd have the Ying and Yang Symbol. That represents EVERYTHING in the Universe and in Our World equally.
ReplyDeletei just came across your blog and i fell in love with all the pictures of tattoos you have posted. i was not crazy about jessica albas tattoo until i read the meaning about it, i think its awesome. and who cares if a celebrity has it? if you love it, then get it..i really really want a tattoo, im just so scared! i want "Imperfection is Beautiful" tattooed across my ribs very small..its the only thing that im attached to enough to have tattooed on me forever..when people ask me why that? i say, "People search for perfection throughout their entire life. Whether it may be their image, their personal appearance, where they live, how they live, or even their characteristics. some people act differently because they want others to look at them as 'being perfect.' but they have it all wrong. Its your imperfections that make you beautiful. whether its the fact that you have the worst voice in the world, you have that freckle on your nose you hate, or habits that you cant stand. so instead of hating your imperfections, you should embrace them and realize that they are what make you who you are..your imperfections make you unique and different, and thats what makes the world go round; different people. through gods eyes your perfect no matter what. people have to learn to love themselves, look past their flaws and realize 'imperfection is beautiful.'" im just scared im not going to like a tattoo on my body when im fourty..but then i have to say to myself, "dont ever regret anything, because at one point it was exactly what you wanted"
ReplyDeletei know this is really long, and i apologize..im just super bored and got carried away. hah goodluck with your tattoo, i hope you make the right decision!
I wouldn't copy the exact tattoo of someone else as I would like to be more original considering it's on your body forever. I want to be the only person with it. However that's just how I feel. I don't think its uncool to copy a tattoo though. I just wouldn't do it.
ReplyDeleteYou said yourself thoguh it's not much to look at until you get deeper into it :) maybe if you prefer something prettier you could look into other symbols for the lotus flower, althoguh at the same time this is pretty cool once you know what it means, just the fact someone else has it would bother me, since tattoo are a bit personal since it's your body I wouldn't want to share it with anyone else :( <3
I think if you *really* want the tat, you should get it - it isn't lame or tacky if you get it because it actually means something to you; it's not like you want it just because you see it on a celebrity's wrist, or because it's trendy.
ReplyDeleteI'm in a bit of the same predicament - there's tons of 'courage' wrist tattoos out there, and I want one - badly.I've tried to talk myself out of it, but I haven't been able to. I still really want one, and the meaning for me is real : I have social phobia, and don't really leave my house on my own. If it makes sense for anybody to have a 'courage' tattoo, it's me. I've gone ahead and decided that if I ever really conquer my demons and face my fears and get out into the world, I'm going to go ahead and treat myself to that courage tattoo as a reward, and a reminder to myself to never let my fears overwhelm me and hold me back again. But until I do that, I won't get the tat, because I feel like I have to 'earn' it first.
I have two tattoos (flowers on the top of my wrist and a trinity knot on my ankle), both of which I got a few years ago at age 42, and have never regretted it...have received many compliments on them. Your Sanskrit idea reminded me of one of my favorite TV shows which inspired me to finally get the first tattoo. The show is Army Wives, and one of the women got a tattoo which in Sanskrit means "a beautiful mistake," meaning that nothing in life is really a mistake if you learn from it and find the beauty in it. Many fans of the show loved this tattoo, so don't worry about getting one that's like a celebrity's if it means something to you. Here's the beautiful mistake tattoo link: http://www.mylifetime.com/shows/army-wives/blog/denises-tattoo-beautiful-mistake
ReplyDeletei love the meaning of the tattoo its something worth getting since it has a good meaning...
ReplyDeleteit doesn't matter if u copy someones tattoo,u should get it but only if it means something to you as well and u think u wont regret it...
i just got a tattoo this year on my birthday and i'm sooo happy i got it i have been wanting it since i was 12 and its supper meaningful to me cause it's a symbol that represents my guardian angel <3
I wouldn't mind copying a celebs tattoo if the story or meaning behind it appeals to me. I am a fan of meaningful tattoo's so why not get inspired by famous people? Nothing wrong with that!
ReplyDeleteSo, did you go for it? Or considering still? :D
