All day, I've been thinking of everyone that was directly affected by 9/11. Today means so much to so many people. I'll never forget that day for as long as I live. I had friends round - we had the news on and observed the plane hit the first tower. We sat in utter devastation as we watched the horror unfold and realised that life would never be quite the same again. The conspiracy theory protesters (who say 9/11 was an inside job) were out in Manchester today. Not sure what to make of that. What do you think?
I thought it might be a fitting day to share my only pictures of my trip to New York in 2004. For someone who loves photography more than most it's pretty weird to think that I took one disposable camera. A disposable camera?! What!! I was clearly insane. Perhaps I underestimated the magic of New York and how the city would affect me when I packed my luggage. Below are the only images that came out. Still cherish 'em though.
Best. Place. Ever.
{ There's a little description under each photo. Brings back wonderful memories. }
10am at the top of the Empire State Building. The weather was glorious; warm with clear skies and a magnificent haze over the entire city. I've seen some amazing sites in my life (Ayres Rock and the Santorini volcano view immediately spring to mind) but this is the only time I was actually choked with emotion.
Times Square. I got a little too drunk in a tiny bar on a sidestreet just away from here. So drunk, in fact, that I fell and banged my head on the curb on the way back to the hotel. But that's another story. Ouch.
The Naked Cowboy. Only in New York.
Not sure who this lady & kid are. But she sure loved The Naked Cowboy. My friend dropped her camera just as I took this shot. The lens jammed and the images she had were never recovered. We both did a truly terrible job of recording this trip. But really, in a place like New York, memories are all you need.
The Statue of Liberty ~ the iconic statue that symbolises freedom.
I always wanted to see a yellow bus! Funny how the everyday things are so intriguing.
You can just see the edge of the Century 21 department store to the left of this shot. I bought tons of random stuff in there, most of which ended up on eBay when i got back to the UK (buyer's remorse). 2004 was a time when lots of labels would sell for 3, 4, 5 times their retail price. I got lucky and made more than enough to pay for my entire trip. Kinda weird considering that was never my intention!
I Loved the 'walk' sign. And the sound it made. Check out the beautiful, amazing, showstopping Flat Iron Building in the distance.
Central Park. Wish this was my local park. Manchester parks don't quite cut it.
This photo was taken in Brooklyn, looking back over to Manhattan. I need to watch 'Remember Me' again because i swear this shot is in the movie.
Walking over the Brooklyn Bridge back to Manhattan. Amazing. And finally...
Ground Zero. The Twin Towers stood behind this wire fencing. Three years after 9/11 many remnants of that day were still clearly visible. How people were able to 'pick up the pieces' and look forward, after a tragedy of such magnitude, I will never comprehend.New York. New York. How I love you so.
...
If you haven't been, please put it on your Bucket List. It's a special place and totally unique. If I could turn back the clock I'd definitely find a way to study or intern there during university. That's a little regret of mine - what an experience it would have been! Now I just need to find another way to make it back there. Any ideas?!
What's your favourite memory of New York? Any plans to visit one day? Where were you on 9/11? Did you fall in love with New York like I did?
♥
those are BEAUTIFUL pictures! THIS is exactly why i LOVE disposable cameras! honestly, i think they take much more stunning photos than DSLRs simply because you basically get 1 chance. and when you get hte prints back, even if its not perfect, you cherish it anyway because its the only one. i think that could say a lot about our desires as humans to want more more more and demand perfection. sometimes less is more!
ReplyDeleteand i never even WENT to century 21 and i lived there for 2 summers! what is wrong with me?! haha
You're totally right Kaelah! I'm going to start buying disposables and investigate some other camera options. The imperfection is what makes them so gorgeous. DSLR images can get boring. I think that's why I love the hipstamatic iPhone app so much too...
ReplyDeleteYou'd love Century 21! Next time! x
your pictures are so so lovely and what a lovely thing to do for today!

Sofia, these pictures are amazing! I love all of them and such a great post to do today. NYC is somewhere I have always wanted to go and one day I WILL make it there! I always felt it is the city I was destined to live in! Thank you for such a beautiful and meaningful post.
ReplyDeleteXOXO
Kim
Hey Lois! Thankkkssss!!!! x
ReplyDeleteLabelSnob - you WILL make it there. To live there would be a dream. It's an unreal place. So much possibility! x
ReplyDeletei think they look even nicer because they're from a disposable camera! I love the effect. Beautiful photos and RIP to all those people who lost their lives.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest i think for the most part, there will always be inside information about events like this that we will never know about, and could well have been an inside job. It wouldn't suprise me, but who knows
Ahh, i'm so in love with your blog :) xx
i totally agree with Kaelah!
ReplyDeletei went to italy this summer and only took my diana mini; the excitement of getting them developed and going through them after the holiday is so exciting and brings back such vivid memories!
plus it's a little pick-me-up if you get post holiday blues!
these are really beautiful pics, it looks like an amazing place x
love the snapshots, very beautifully taken, esp the view u've captured from the top of the empire state bldg. tat has gotta be my fave! i love photography too, cos every snapshot captures n preserves a moment in time which we want so much to treasure and to remember. u did a great job :)
ReplyDeleteI'm currently saving for a trip to New York next year. I've never been before but I'm already in love with it. I know a few people who have been and all of them have said nothing but wonderful things.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like such a magical city. I need to feel the intensity of falling in love with a place, that's something I've never felt and New York is a special city that makes people fall in love. I am so desperate to experience it.
R.I.P the victims of 9/11. Such a horrible tragedy. It still hurts to look at photos of it and it has never personally affected me so it must be awful for the people who it has affected. :(

Those photos are beautiful! You're making me excited to visit New York. Such a magical and fitting tribute to the victims of 9/11 as well :( xx

Your photos are fantastic; it's everything we strive for in our iPhone apps and Picnik edits occurring naturally... :-P
ReplyDeleteI love the shot from Brooklyn through the trees.
I've never even been out of NZ but NYC is top of my to-visit list. The biggest dream I have.
I live in NYC, always have my whole life. I remember 9/11 so vividly. A lot of my friends had dads that died or worked there and got sick. Honestly today it was like nothing was different. Maybe enough time is starting to pass that it doesn't hurt as much as it used to.
ReplyDeleteIt is so weird to me when people make posts like this. I live 4 blocks away from Central Park and think nothing of it. I guess I take my city for granted some times.
I'll be in NYC in just over two days! I was there a couple of years ago as well. I'll be honest, I didn't fall in love with the place like most people seem to do. Don't get me wrong, it was so much fun being a complete tourist there and I'm looking forward to going back but... I don't know, I really can't pinpoint what it was that just didn't do it for me. I would say it was because I'm not much of a big city girl but I went to Chicago after NYC and adored it there so who knows. I can't deny that I absolutely fell in love with Central Park though.
ReplyDeleteAnd I can't believe how 9/11 was nine years ago now. I remember getting back from school and just watching the news all evening. I visited Ground Zero when I was last in NYC and got one of the eeriest feelings I've ever had. I'm not sure whether I'll go back there this time but I'll be sure to pay my respects in my own way for the victims of 9/11 while I'm there.
Beautiful pictures, I'm going to get a disposable camera. I've never been but I'm eager to visit NY, it seems an amazing city, I know it won't disappoint me.
ReplyDeleteI perfectly remember what I was doing that day, I was at highschool and that day we didn't have classes because here september 11th is the Day of the Teacher, and I remember when I woke up and turned on the tv, it seemed a movie, something unreal. It was horrible.
I know it's a bit naive of me, but I just hope that at some point humanity could reach a point where we all could live in peace and equality.
Great post, and fab photos of New York x
ReplyDeletei went a couple years back and oh my, it was completely overwhelming! it was crazy for me to go from a touristy seaside town in the south west of england to the massive skyscrapers of the big apple! i too saw the naked cowboy! hahaa. what a sight?!
ReplyDeletei visited the little chapel near ground zero & the attacks still felt so fresh. i just hope that we all learn from it & that people never have to experience anything like it ever again.
These photos are so good, even though they're from a disposable camera.
ReplyDeleteI visited New York aroud 3 weeks ago and also went last year. It's such a beautiful place and I just found it horrible to think of the devestation that happen in 2001.
xxx
these are some beautiful photos! new york looks like quite photographic in general. i'm going there in december for the first time :D i have wanted to go all my life. not one person has come back from new york and said they hated it! i think it's incredible how the city has gone on to even bigger and better things despite the devastation! i want to quote kanye west here but it seems slightly innappropriate haha. hopefully i'll have my own photos to upload near the end of the year, eee! xxx
ReplyDeleteYes I looveee NY with all my heart, its where my heart lives! I have friend out there and have been to stay for a couple weeks twice now and i am going back in January. i can't wait. The best way for me is to find a man out there :P xx
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photography! I need to go! I've been wanting to go for such a long time. I also plan to live there for a year or so just for the experience in the future. I love London too much to live in NYC forever though :)
ReplyDeleteMonica x
I agree with Kaelah - when you have only a certain number of shots you put more thought into what you're going to take. With my digital camera I take so many pictures so thoughtlessly sometimes - plus there's no chance to delete the embarassing pictures off of the disposable! Excellent for incriminating evidence!
ReplyDeleteThose are fantastic pictures - I especially love the ones of Brooklyn they're just gorgeous. New York is my ultimate goal - I'll get there even if I have to beg, steal and borrow!!
This post and the beautiful photos have made me actually want to travel to New York, somewhere which previously I dismissed as being somewhere which is just rushrushrush and a dirtier version of London. Now you've changed my mind and I wanna go (: Thank you for opening my eyes!
ReplyDeleteHi Sofia, I went when I was three, but I don't really remember. I'm going on may next year for my 25th birthday with my bf. Am so excited, booking it in January arghhhh. My mom just got back, she said it's amazing. Taking my slr and a polaroid. Xxx
ReplyDeleteoh i love new york! i have been twice, once before 9/11 and once afterwards. i even went up to the top of the world trade centre when i visited the first time so it made seeing it fall down on tv even more eerie. i really want to go back some day.
ReplyDeletelove these images, disposable cameras just take such amazing photographs.
ReplyDeleteI went to NY when i was really tiny so i don't remember much, but I know it's somewhere that i really want to go someday!

ReplyDelete@Gem Gem - oh, wow, so jealous! May should be a perfect time to go as it'll be lovely and warm but not crazy hot. It will be the best time of your life!
Those are really great photos,
ReplyDeletethe camera gives them a really good old, effect.
Would love to go to New York!

I know you only had a disposable camera but honestly your pictures are really really beautiful. I miss New York, really can't wait to go back. Guess it's that kind of place haha.
ReplyDeleteMuch Love

The photos totally suit the subject - you couldn't have chosen a better camera!
ReplyDeleteI went gap year travelling in 2001 - first stop was New York on September 15th 2001; how insane.
It was certainly a memorable and emotional visit. Without meaning any disrespect I absolutely cannot wait to go back one day and have a more 'normal' experience.
Well, call me a trashy american but i think song's like "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue helped us heal. And of course standing together with a sense of unity and a renewed patriotism.
