With the intention to move into my first flat by the end of the year, one of my goals for 2010 was to refinish a piece of furniture. a) to save money and b) just to see if I could do it! At the time I didn't know what item I would attempt to work on but I soon settled on bedside cabinets... because I knew I wanted a 'shabby chic' look for a new bedroom and white painted cabinets might fit nicely with that idea. Just to make it clear - I intend to move into a converted Victorian flat with high ceilings and period features, not a new build apartment where this style of decor probably wouldn't work.
I bid on and won a pair of solid wood bedside cabinets on eBay and drove 5 miles to collect them. They were in perfect condition and I paid £15.

First a little disclaimer...don't expect a miracle here! This was a first attempt at something totally outside my comfort zone and in showing you the result I'm opening myself up for criticism. Please be kind! several coats of white paint later, a touch of distressing and a change of handles and I was left with these:

As I said earlier, my idea for a new bedroom when I finally find the 'perfect' flat is a little vintage inspired and somewhat 'shabby chic'. I've always been a modern, minimalist kind of girl when it comes to home interiors yet fancy trying a new direction. Here are some other items I have my eye on:
Bed frame £99.99 at ArgosI quite like the idea of a grey wall where the bedhead rests, like this:

A close up of this Cath Kidston bouquet duvet cover set:

Magenta pink bedspread by Iohn Lewis, £60
My next mission is to find a matching pair of table lamps (for cheap!) which will team well with the bedside cabinets and the black bed frame. Any ideas where to look?If anyone is interested in a brief tutorial on how I went about changing up the bedside cabinets just let me know and if enough people are interested I'll put a post together. Before the summer is out I have the frame of a large mirror to paint white and have plans for a fun noticeboard project which will end up on the wall of my new kitchen.
Have you ever refinished a piece of furniture? What home interiors projects have you tackled? Are you a modern, minimalist girl or a vintage, shabby chic lover? Drop me a note in the comments section - I'd love to hear your views!

ReplyDeleteThey're adorable! Reminds me of the DIY furniture you see on designspongeonline.com. A tutorial would be great, wouldn't mind having a go myself. I'm thinking of doing the same with maybe a bookcase.
ReplyDeleteI think they look good! I'm hoping to get a chair at a car boot Sunday so I can do it up. So much more fun than buying off the shelves!
ReplyDelete@Laura's Blog - what did you try doing? how did it turn out?
ReplyDelete@Sequin This - I also have plans for a bookcase!
@Emily - isn't it just SO much more fun!! I'm going to a car boot sunday too, to see what treasures I can find.
they look so good! I am doing up my room in my new flat but sadly it's rented so can't do too much.

ReplyDeleteI'm definitely a shabby chic/cottage girl! My house is pretty much all white with pastel colour ...Oh yes see if there's a Home Sense near you - their stuff is pretty good!
@cowbiscuits - I'll certainly be looking for a much cheaper bedspread and I'll check asda out, so thanks for the tip! otherwise i'll wait until the january sales as definitely don't want to pay more than around £30.

ReplyDeleteHi Sofia,
ReplyDeleteI have been following your blog for a couple of weeks and today have read through all of your posts! Have been off from work so what better way to curl up and have a good ole read! Firstly your blog is great, I like the fact it covers a bit of everything... you inspired me to make a list of goals to achieve in the four months before Christmas too! I showed my boyfriend your newly customised bedside tables and we are keen to do a set we have similar. If it's possible can you do a step by step guide? Sorry to sound a little stupid for asking, but they look great and would love to copy your style. Thanks again for a great blog :)
Helen
^ Hi Helen...thanks so much for your great comment. I'm going to do a step by step tutorial hopefully by the end of the week so watch this space! xx

ReplyDeleteA girl after my own heart, I love both this post and the cork board one. When I moved in to my new flat (you can so do it btw) crossing my fingers for you finding your dream home, anyway my neighbours next door, bless their hearts had a gold ornate mirror, they knew I didn't have much and offered it to me as they were throwing it away, at first I thought it was gastly and accepted it out of pure good heart, but then I got some cream paint, re-did the frame, cleaned the mirror up and now it is sitting very pretty above my bathroom sink. Tada, free and fabulous. You've inspired me to do more. Also I am a photographer and have just started my own painting and decorating company, so qudos to you lady, common intrests ftw xxx
ReplyDeleteHey Gem Gem - I just read your bio 'I love taking pictures, cooking and watching comedy programmes.' A girl after my own heart! Lots of common interests :) I've just clicked over to your blog and about to read about your home!xx
