Non-Comedogenic Foundation

If you've been reading this blog from the start you'll know that I've been struggling with my skin a little bit this year - nothing too serious - I'm experiencing good results with my current skincare routine in addition to trialing microdermabrasion.

Until recently I thought that foundations labelled 'oil free' were 'non-comedogenic' (free from ingredients that clog pores). I just discovered that this isn't the case. Even some products that are labelled 'non-comedogenic' can promote breakouts. There are actually very few truly non-comedogenic foundations on the market.

I came across this very useful post which lists foundations that are truly non-comedogenic. I noticed right away that my favourite brand, bobbi brown, was included. This lead me to purchase the foundation stick last week for £26 and here is my review.

Firstly, the packaging is gorgeous - very classy and sophisticated. The size makes this perfect for portability. It will fit nicely in your handbag. Having said that, it doesn't seem like a lot of foundation for £26. I've really no idea how long this will last, but I fear it could work out as an expensive option.

I was colour matched in Selfridges, Manchester. There are 20 shades in the range so whatever your skin tone I believe you have a very good shot at finding a Bobbi Brown shade that suits you. Bobbi says "I have yet to find a woman whose skin doesn't have yellow undertones - that's why all my foundations have a yellow base. It's what looks most natural". This yellow-base is their unique selling point and they say it is the secret to perfect skin. I was quite amazed at the difference it made. More on that in just a second. I was matched with beige (#3).

Wow, what can i say? in over a decade of using foundation I never thought it could look this natural. I've been happy with foundation shades before but now, in comparison to this, I can see that they looked too pink, too orange or too white. This shade is perfection and when it's applied properly it looks like my own skin.

I'm a lover of liquid foundation which I apply with my mac 187 brush for an airbrushed effect. as much as I love this foundation stick I know that I cannot live with it alone - I want to buy the Bobbi Brown Natural Finish liquid foundation (also non-comedogenic) to use lightly over my whole face. Then I'll use the foundation stick to build further coverage where I need it. I'm also keen to try their Vitamin Enriched Face Base which has had amazing reviews. Apparently it doubles as a moisturiser and primer and creates the perfect base for applying foundation.

Another amazing thing about this foundation? It is very long lasting. I wore it all day at Sunday's festival and didn't touch up with powder once. When I got home I was shocked to see that my face looked near perfect. Usually I would have a shiny t-zone.

the Bobbi Brown foundation stick is marketed as 'for all skin types except oily'. I'm a little bit confused by this as I do have an oily t-zone and found this worked better that any other foundation I've ever tried! Go figure. I don't find it that moisturising either - I'd be interested to hear how those with dry skin find it?

What's your holy grail foundation? which Bobbi Brown products have you used? Any raves? Are you a liquid foundation girl or do you prefer mineral foundation or stick foundation? Leave a comment and tell all!

  4. Just say this post now! I have normal/dry skin and I didn't get on with this at all. It felt too difficult to spread and seemed to emphasise dry areas, after my experience with it I thought it was geared towards people with oily skin! xx
